A reliable way to capture signatures on the road. Drivers need a simple, mobile-friendly way to capture recipient signatures at the point of delivery, which typically means a phone or tablet-based tool rather than anything requiring specialized hardware.
Secure, durable archiving. Since the e-CMR replaces a legal proof-of-delivery document, it needs to be stored reliably and remain retrievable for as long as the business may need to produce it, whether for a client dispute, an insurance claim, or a tax or customs audit.
Interoperability with partners. Because a shipment often involves multiple parties (shipper, carrier, recipient, sometimes a broker), the chosen e-CMR solution needs to be able to exchange documents with partners who may be using a different platform entirely, which is why open, standards-based architectures tend to work better in practice than closed, proprietary systems.
A Realistic Path Forward for Transport SMEs
Start where the pressure already exists. If specific clients or shippers are already requesting digital waybills, prioritize adopting e-CMR for those relationships first rather than attempting a full fleet-wide switch on day one.
Keep paper as a fallback during the transition. Since paper remains fully legal, a phased approach, digital for some routes or clients while paper continues elsewhere, is both realistic and low-risk during the adoption period.
Treat it as part of a broader document strategy, not an isolated tool. e-CMR sits naturally alongside other transport paperwork, delivery notes, driver logs, invoices, that could benefit from the same shift toward secure, centralized, digital document management, rather than being adopted as a standalone point solution.
Watch the eFTI compliance dates. With full state-level application required by July 2027, transport SMEs working across borders or with larger shippers subject to earlier obligations have a concrete window to prepare rather than a distant, abstract deadline.

No transport SME needs to panic about an imminent mandate that, as of 2026, doesn't actually exist for individual carriers.
